Migration Counts

“Hawk counts,” where observers tally raptors migrating to and from their breeding and wintering grounds, have been going on in North America for nearly a century, and provide an excellent way to assess population trends of otherwise hard-to-monitor raptor species. We have recorded raptors as they migrate over MPG Ranch, in Montana’s Bitterroot Valley, since 2011. Our counts have established MPG Ranch as one of the few sites in North America where significant flights are counted in both the spring and fall seasons. Further, our fall counts have been the highest of Montana’s five total active surveys in recent years and have helped document the rise in Turkey Vulture numbers that led to the creation of our Montana Turkey Vulture Project.
